Occupations throughout the years
I thought I would do a blog about the different occupations that our relatives have had as I myself have recently completely change careers. I myself have worked for the last 19 years in child care and have recently changed to being a machinist and becoming a genealogist for others.
Over the years I have been researching my family history I have found many occupations some I have heard off some I have not.
Police
My paternal great grandfather was a metropolitan policeman. He served for the first period in February 1913 then in February 1916 he was the required to resign in February 1927 due to being drunk and not working his beat.
Gardener
My maternal grandfather was a gardener. He started gardening in 1960 when he moved to the village I currently live in to work the grounds of the big house as part of that job he was given a house. He later worked for quite a few houses in the village. He was also a volunteer firefighter for the local town.
Farrier and Blacksmith
My 3x paternal great grandfather was a farrier between 1871 and 1880 and then moved on to being a blacksmith from the 1881 census.
Bedstead Maker
My paternal 2x great grandfather was a bedstead maker on my great grandmothers birth certificate. This I one of the jobs I had not heard of before and I had to look up what it entailed. But by the time she was married in 1911 he was a mechanic.
Tin Box Maker
My paternal grandmother according to the 1939 register she was done as working in a food factory making tin boxes.
Straw hat sewer
My maternal 3x great grandmother and some of her daughters all worked as straw hat sewers. This seems to be a family job as there was also a straw hat bleacher in the same family.
Cook
I have also recently found out that my Paternal grandmother also worked as a cook in the Kent police canteen in the 70’s.
